چکیده

With the aid of a simple yet robust approach we investigate the influence of dissipationless and dissipative merging on galaxy structure, and the consequent effects on the scaling laws followed by elliptical galaxies. Our results suggest that ellipticals cannot be originated by parabolic merging of low mass spheroids only, even in presence of substantial gas dissipation. However, we also found that scaling laws such as the Faber-Jackson, Kormendy, Fundamental Plane, and the MBH −σ relations, when considered over the whole mass range spanned by ellipticals in the local universe, are robust against merging. We conclude that galaxy scaling laws, possibly established at high redshift by the fast collapse in pre-existing dark matter halos of gas rich and clumpy stellar distributions, are compatible with a (small) number of galaxy mergers at lower redshift. Properties of Early-type, Dry Galaxy Mergers and the Origin of Massive Elliptical Galaxies

The luminosity dependence of kinematical and isophotal properties of elliptical galaxies is investigated using numerical simulations of galaxy merging, combined with semi-analytical models of hierarchical structure formation. Mergers of spiral galaxies as the only formation mechanism for elliptical galaxies can neither reproduce the kinematical and photometric properties of very massive ellipti...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

The Spatial Distributions of Red and Blue Globular Clusters in Major Dry Merger Remnants

Using high-resolution N-body simulations, we examine whether a major dry merger mitigate the different radial density distributions of red and blue globular clusters (GCs), since in nearby elliptical galaxies the red GCs have a steeper radial profile than the blue GCs. To this end, we study the relation between the density slope of the GCs in merger progenitors and that in a merger remnant, whe...

Starburst in multiple galaxy mergers

We numerically investigate stellar and gaseous dynamical evolution of mergers between five identical late-type disk galaxies with the special emphasis on star formation history and chemical evolution of multiple galaxy mergers. We found that multiple encounter and merging can trigger repetitive massive starbursts (typically ∼ 100 M yr−1) owing to the strong tidal disturbance and the resultant g...
